Attalla to Albertville OPGW Install

Overview

Helicopter operations modernized Alabama Power’s transmission infrastructure

Project Highlights
  • 19.5 miles of OPGW installed through mountainous Appalachian foothills
  • 95 complex guard structures installed including interstate highway crossing, three railroad crossings, and multiple road crossings with zero disruption
  • State-of-the-art Optical Ground Wire

HVA partnered with Alabama Power to execute the critical Attalla to Albertville OPGW installation project, upgrading transmission infrastructure across 19.5 miles of challenging northeastern Alabama terrain. The project involved replacing 34 structures of varying types (wood, concrete H-frame, and single-pole) while installing sophisticated Optical Ground Wire that serves the dual purpose of providing fiber optic communications and protecting against lightning strikes and electrical faults. Our helicopter-based approach reduced project time by 50% compared to conventional methods while minimizing environmental impact through reduced soil erosion and equipment access needs.

The strategic use of aerial operations enabled seamless navigation of complex crossings including an interstate highway, multiple railroads, and various roadways without service disruptions. This successful modernization effort significantly enhances grid reliability and communication capabilities for Alabama Power, improving storm restoration response times and overall system resilience for customers throughout the region.
