Wytheville 14-Mile Line Removal
Overview
Helicopter decommissioning modernized grid, preserved Virginia landscape
High Voltage Advanced partnered with Appalachian Power to execute the complex removal of a historic 14-mile transmission line in Wytheville, Virginia, as part of the larger Glendale Area Improvements grid modernization project. This century-old 88kV line, which originally brought the first electricity to the region via the Byllesby Hydroelectric Dam, had become obsolete due to new transmission infrastructure and substation improvements that enhanced regional grid reliability.

Our team deployed a Sikorsky S-70 Blackhawk helicopter to safely and efficiently dismantle all 96 lattice towers across the challenging rolling hills terrain in record time. The helicopter-based approach eliminated the need for heavy ground equipment and road construction, preserving the natural landscape while dramatically reducing project duration from months to just one week. This successful decommissioning project demonstrates our capability to handle complex aerial operations while supporting utility modernization efforts that strengthen grid resilience for southwest Virginia communities.
